<itunes:summary>Author Michael Kleiner takes us on an interesting journey in his book, Beyond the Cold: An American's Warm Portrait of Norway. Beyond the Cold is unique because it is told through Michael's memories of a year spent in Norway as an 11-year old with his family, and an adult's perspective, after he returns several times as an adult. As a child, he attended a Norwegian school, learned Norwegian and about the culture and enjoyed unique experiences. One of his adult trips included spending a summer at the International Summer School at the University of Oslo with 500 students from 70 countries. Through these trips, Michael's affection and appreciation for the country, its culture, social system and people grew. The book is written with warmth, sensitivity, humor, caring and insight. Michael discovered the value of multiculturalism, a “second home and family” in Norway – a country that is more than cold weather. Listen to broadcasts of Kleiner's recent appearances to varied audiences. An interesting aspect was his meeting non-Jewish and Jewish survivors and resisters in WWII and stories of rescue. Audiences include people interested in learning about a multicultural experience that spans childhood and adulthood; older adults programs; Norwegian-American organizations; schools that stress and conduct multicultural programs and events; Jewish groups who would be interested in the stories about the war as well as the cultural aspects. Take a listen and then contact Michael Kleiner if you are interested in hosting Michael for a discussion of the book. BookWire writes: “Beyond the Cold is not the usual sort of travel guide. Instead it is a reconstruction of his seven trips to Norway, beginning with his immersion as a boy of 10. In each journey, he reveals different facets of his beloved Norway, from the Norwegian schoolyard and winter wonder he experienced as a child to the political climate he saw as an adult. Kleiner's childhood memoirs are particularly fascinating...Written in a straightforward style, Beyond the Cold contains some fascinating asides about Norwegian history and culture...his affection for his second home shines through on every page...” The broadcasts are in mp3 format.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>During the 2006 Infinity Publishing Conference there was a reading circle among the authors, that created a sense of community. Lois W. Stern gathered a list, Michael Kleiner made an Infinity Publishing Authors page on his web site. Eleven authors developed Infinity Authors pages on their web sites. The main movers behind the community were Stern, Kleiner, Susan C. Haley, Donna Jaske and John Wolf in California. The result was this session of Authors Helping Authors at the 2007 Infinity Conference. Jerry Simmons, former VP of Time-Warner Books, participated on the panel and Melanie Rigney was the moderator. Wolf could not make the conference.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Michael was able to take a slightly different approach than when he talked to his son, Matthew's class (below). The class has been writing journals, and the book is written as a journal. The students had read Roald Dahl's The Witches (of Norway)and Michael had been to places mentioned in the book. He has also visited a fairy-tale museum on one of his trips. Slides were used during the presentation.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Michael found a friendly audience at the Sholom Aleicheim Club, a Secular Jewish organization for whom he does public relations and their web site. His parents have been members for years. The presentation is easily adaptable to a Jewish audience because an interesting aspect was his meeting non-Jewish and Jewish survivors and resisters in WWII and stories of rescue, both as a child and an adult.
